Foffdaughter: Olaf update
Olaf was neutered on March 14th, and he made it through. The entire affair, from the initial sedative to WonderVet leaving, took maybe 45-55 minutes. Olaf did fine once the anesthesia wore off, which was around 2-3:00 the next morning. He seems no worse for the wear aside from being robbed of his 'family jewels', as WonderVet called them (when asking if I was planning on keeping them).

Delight
"Animals Should Definitely NOT Wear Clothing." is a Scholastic book for kids (small words, big font) written by Judi Barrett and illustrated by Ron Barrett, and it is is well worth investigating.
Shovel Initiation
For Christmas, Foffdaughter got me a nice blue folding shovel. This is to keep in my car to remove roadkill from the road. There are three reasons to do this. One, animals like buzzards eat dead creatures. This is an important job. Buzzards have not learned that popping down to munch on a squished squirrel on the wrong side of a blind curve leads to a very dismayed driver, and two species of roadkill. Two, humans drive in unpredictable dangerous ways to avoid hitting a dead animal, particularly a skunk. Three, nothing deserves to rot out in the middle of the road. I could add esthetics into this, it is unsightly, but I suspect is it just as unsightly in the ditch, but we cannot see it.
This morning, FoffHusbandDad called. He had seen what might be a dead cat two houses up the road from ours. As we have many cats, some semi-feral, he knew I would want to check this out. So trying not to be a wuss, I drove to the still furred form. I did not know what it was, but it was not a cat. I used my shovel to push it to the side of the road, and took a picture. Later, thanks to Google, I identified it as a mink. I was just so glad it was not someone I knew. And that is selfish and short sighted I know.
But it is true.

Un-Life-Day
Going through my photos from the past few years seemed to increase the significance of the DeathDay anniversaries (four-leggeds) on my calendar. Interesting how these things work, but going through all of those pictures was totally worth it; even if it made absent faces feel fresh and familiar again. Some long-lost. but utterly impersonal and meaningless pictures:

Beagle update
She sits on command in the house most of the time. She has had 4 "accidents" in 11 days, pretty good. She tolerates being crated. She reminds me when it is her meal time (still 3 feeds a day). And she gained one pound her first week. Starting weight was 18 pounds. You can still see her ribs, but they don't scream "starving dog" like they did. Good progress. And I call her Birdie.
She is quite lonely. Our dogs disdain her, largely because of her heat related behavior. I am hoping after her spay that will change, permanently. The cats still think she is an intruder from Hades, since she greats them in the canine fashion of sticking one's nose up the new friend's butt. Since cats don't socialize that way, they respond in a horrified manner, hissing and clawing. Birdie is self-confident, and is sure with persistence she will win them over.
